Women of faith conference Day 2 (Part 2)

The KEY to spiritual warfare is not to give Satan the headlines.

A 1-month old christian, God chose to use her to lead the women's ministry in a church in China, where her husband was sent for work. There she was, a young and ill-equiped christian who only knows how to open the bible and point to a passage where she asked God to speak to her. After being challenged, she went back home, did just that and lo and behold, God gave her the verse from the bible, "You did not choose me but I chose you..." What else can she say...God has answered her question, she was to lead the ministry. Not long after that, a friend came to her and told her that she is a backslided christian. She told her that if she were to start a bible study group, she will come but provided she talked about health as her son is often sick. She went home, uncertain and decided to commit this to God again. She went to look at the daily bread which a visitor had given her as repayment for allowing her to stay at her place, and God spoke again. This time, that our body is a temple of God. She had to accept the call. There is simply no coincidence to all this. That was how her ministry for women began 15 years ago. Her church which was initially to close down due to the communist influence during that period of time, was blessed by God to continue. They did and served together. Different denominations, different countries but a heart to build God's kingdom. From September to December, God grew the church from 60 people to a congregation of 600!

A Powerful testimony that shows it does not take a lot to serve God, just a willing heart...

It's TIME for a BREAK!

women of faith conference - Day 2

WANTING GOD MOST

We began the morning by studying from the character of Martha, how we oftentimes are just like her in dealing with the endless demands of our work, ministry, commitments and have NO TIME to seek God for refreshment.

Spending time with God is not a scheduling issue, it is a HEART issue. Work will never end, the things that is required to be attended to piles up one after another but we do not compromise with spending time with God. Mary recognise WHO was there sitting at the living room - JESUS and she was there. When everything is taken away from our lives, God asks, "Am I everything in your life?"

"What would I find in my own heart if the noise
of the world were silenced? Who would I be?
Who will I be, when loss or crisis or the depredations
Of time take away the trappings of success,
Of self-importance, even personality itself:

Women of faith conference - Day 1

"Ladies, give at least 3 people around you a hug to welcome them!"

That's how the conference began for me...it's really good to be in the company of a group of godly and lovely women who love God and have impacted many lives around them. Look at the bag, it is so cool :) This is the first time I receive a goodie bag with a bag of assorted nuts and raisins for a conference! It's really so WOMEN haha... The plenary speaker talked about belonging and security from 2 Samuel 9:1-12 from the life of King David.

The story of a strong, powerful king (David) who stooped down to a person (Mephibosheth) who is everything he is not and gave him all he has. Doesn't that sound just like our wonderful God? The beauty of GRACE lies in that it does not need to be earned but is given freely to all who is willing to receive.

Is our hearts still grateful that we are are invited into His grace?

No one gets left behind

Found this from Alexis's blog, it mirrors what I was thinking of a few days back... In an army, we do not leave anyone behind...

A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home after having fought in Vietnam. He called his parents from San Francisco. "Mom and Dad, I'm coming home, but I've a favor to ask. I have a friend I'd like to bring home with me." "Sure," they replied, "we'd love to meet him." "There's something you should know," the son continued, "he was hurt pretty badly in the fighting. He stepped on a land mine and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to come live with us." "I'm sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live." "No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us." "Son," said the father, "you don't know what you're asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden on us. We have our own lives to live, and we can't let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He'll find a way to live on his own." At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him. A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son had died after falling from a building, they were told. The police believed it was suicide. The grief-stricken parents flew to San Francisco and were taken to the city morgue to identify the body of their son. They recognized him, but to their horror they also discovered something they didn't know, their son had only one arm and one leg. The parents in this story are like many of us. We find it easy to love those who are good-looking or fun to have around, but we don't like people who inconvenience us or make us feel uncomfortable. We would rather stay away from people who aren't as healthy, beautiful, or smart as we are.

God, thanks for your reminder once again :)

Word of God Speak

The day began beautifully for me with images representing verses from the bible...

On half day leave so I can prepare my heart for the women's conference later and tmr. I am quietly excited in my heart to learn from these women who has been there and done that, making impact in their lives for God. A Mary in a martha world, one of the workshop titles, it reminds me of a book I read b4 and was very ministered.

Whenever I think of Mary, I imagine her sitting at the feet of Jesus gazing adoringly at him as He shares to her. The song will come to mind, "Lord I lay me down, at your feet in worship and listen to the sweetest voice of all..." Sadly, I do feel like martha most of the time, though my hearts longs to be a mary :)

This morning I looked for wallpapers on faith and came across many wallpapers on God's word. As I look at them and listen to the worship songs, I feel so amazed that God can speak in such a powerful way to engage my senses and ...

This is my favourite :)

People matters when God matters

I am feeling so tired now and having a splitting headache but there are just many things going through my mind...the 2 words that came to mind was - PEOPLE MATTERS

What will my job be without people? With the H1N1 virus, our Home will be closed down if we reach Code Red. Yep, no pple -> No job.

What will my CG be like without people? It will just be like a body without a soul. Tonight I experienced strongly the love that people show, those who were present and those who will not. After long days at work, how will we want to spend our night? Many will say sleep, watch a movie, go for massage, watch tv etc..well, basically anything that can relax us but tonight, a group of 12 of us gathered to fellowship and learn abt God's word.

A friend smsed me in the evening...when is your CG this week, can I join? People need God and they need others to lead them to God!

Tonight a sister took a cab down from her work to come for CG, another came at almost 10pm in a tired but joyful state, still another brother came even though he only has one off day for the week. The rest who have been preparing for the CG for the past few days and ask about CG even when they are not around. A sister who wanted to visit another sister who is still wrking and an sms of encouragement for people who led the games. Another came with gifts to bless others.

I can see God's love in every single of these acts, thoughts, the smile and "can do spirit" they carry with them tonight. I can see God in the CHEERING ON of a team mate...
When God matters, people matters :)

A Change in perspective

A closer look at the picture will enable us to see a mother and child praying...

Many times in life, we need a shift in perspective to help us look beyond the situation we face. Look to God and we can see things from a different light, in His direction :)

The Army of the Lord

The Army of the Lord

A friend was in front of me coming out of church one day, and the preacher was standing at the door as he always is to shake hands. He grabbed my friend by the hand and pulled him aside.

The Pastor said to him, "You need to join the Army of the Lord!"My friend replied, "I'm already in the Army of the Lord, Pastor." Pastor questioned, "How come I don't see you except at Christmas and Easter?"

He whispered back, "I'm in the secret service."

Letter of thanksgiving

Step by step we're moving forward,
Little by little taking ground,
Every prayer is a powerful weapon,
Strongholds all come tumbling down
And down and down and down......

Dear God,

Thank you for blessing us with 2 free tickets yesterday, for giving us a cab when we were just about to give up, for providing a guide to share about the history of China (though not to us), for giving us a wonderful moment on the bridge, for a great sister's gathering, for the 1 for 1 desert, for the cancellation of the meeting, for the claim which came in handy, for the one day off so I do not have to take leave, for the colleague who teach me how to block the websites, for the child who gave me a pen, for the notes that was in line with what I had in mind, for the coupon, for the chrysathemum tea, for the sandwich breakfast my colleague made for us. I can go on and on.

Love,
Jiayan

Love for Strangers

Today's sermon touched something deep in my heart.
Human love versus God's love.

When we have the love of men, only certain people are attractive and appealing to us. We get close to people because we can make use of them. When we have the love of God, we find ourselves loving everyone all the same. We begin to have love for strangers.

Maybe it is the straightforwardness of the way the truth is being delivered. No wrapping or decoration. Just stark honesty which tug at the heart which will respond. The willingness to see each individual with a clean slate, as though we are seeing them for the very first time. No labels, no expectations, no promises. Just a heart that breaks for what breaks His.

Love God -> Love people

He is the answer

"Listen my friend, God doesn't care about your music, your midget steeples, and your flesh-impressive buildings. Your church carpet doesn't impress Him-He carpets the fields. God doesn't really care about anything you can "do" for him; He only cares about your answer to one question:"Do You want me?"

"Do you want to know why we've lived in weaknesses as Christians and have not had all that God wanted for us? Do you want to know why we have lived beneath our priviledge and have not had the strength to overcome our own carnality? Maybe it's because we haven't waited on Him to show up to empower us, and we're trying to do too much in the power of our own soulish realm."

Night at the museum 2

"The KEY to happiness is to do what you love, being with people you love"
(quote from movie)

Down But Not Out

Drained and defeated, I lay on the floor
My last ounce of strength dwindling
Struggling. My body remains sprawled
One,two...I hear the referee counting

I need the magic
The magic of the supernatural
Gaining strength
A huge slam, the winner announced

The worth of the match
in just the count of three

May I.. can I.. come in? Please?

Happy 6th Birthday, KISHAN!! :)

Today is the birthday of my favourite kid in the Home. Every morning, he will knock at my door and say, "Jie Jie Jasmine, may I..can I come in please?" He will greet me with a smile and a hug. His favourite cartoon character is Ben10, his favourite superhero Iron man, his favourite colour purple and his favourite animal rabbit. He has those big, innocent eyes which just melts your heart. I thank God for this little angel who brings me joy each day I go to work.

I gave him a fake donut from action city for his birthday and I warned him b4hand NOT to eat it. He touched it, smelled it and took a bite (much to my shock), spat out and said, "Yucks"

hahahaha...

One Desire

God: If you can have all the things in the world... BUT on the condition that you cannot have me, what will you like to have?

Many years ago, I read this question in a book and it sent a chill in me...
A world without God, I cannot imagine.

Yesterday I brought a child to the hospital to do medical check-up. As he lay on the bed in the ward, he eyes kept turning to look at me, to see whether I am there. When the nurse drew the curtains for the examination to take place, he looked at me nervously. After the examination, he followed me closely and I brought him to the playground. As he was playing, I went to the bench to sit. When he could not see me, I saw him searching for me frantically.

Just like a child who feels lost without his parents/caregiver, I feel lost without my heavenly father. God, thank you for reminding me today how much I need you in my life.

The one thing, the one thing...
I ask..
Is to be with You

Life's paradoxes

Life is full of its paradoxes...and that is what makes it interesting and extremely complex at times. Just when you thought you got it, poof! you find yourself starting from point zero. I guess the whole idea is not to reach a conclusion or destination but the PROCESS, which makes it so appealing - LIFE. This morning, as I was traveling to work, I think of me. Yes, teeny weeny me. Imperfect me. Me and my weaknesses. As much as I detest my flaws and inequities, I can't help but acknowledge that they are what makes me human. Afterall, humanity began when Adam and Eve fell from perfection, isn't it? To strive for perfection again is easier said than done. It's a lot of WORK, ain't it? Wouldn't it be easier to lay down all this imperfections at the throne of the only one who can cleanse us? For His grace is sufficient and his strength made perfect in our weaknesses.
The very thing that reminds us of our own imperfection
can also be the thing that turns us to God

The Z Monster

I LOVE to sleep...

And for all those who are like me... below is the number of hours of sleep we need:

Newborns - 14 to 16 hours
Infants - 10 to 14 hours
Children & teenagers - 10 hours
Adults - 8 hours
Pregnant woman - 11 hours
Older adults over 65 - 6 hours
Is Your Lifestyle Ruining Your Sleep?

1. For an afternoon pick-me-up, I often have a:
A. latte
B. Soda
C. Cup of herbal tea

Caffeine is also a stimulant and is present in coffee (100-200 mg), soda (50-75 mg), tea (50-75 mg), and various over-the-counter medications. Caffeine should be discontinued at least four to six hours before bedtime. If you consume large amounts of caffeine and you cut your self off too quickly, beware; you may get headaches that could keep you awake.

2. Nothing ends the day better than a:
A. Cigarette
B. Glass of wine or a beer
C. Glass of milk

A light snack may be sleep-inducing, but a heavy meal too close to bedtime interferes with sleep. Stay away from protein and stick to carbohydrates or dairy products. Milk contains the amino acid L-tryptophan, which has been shown in research to help people go to sleep. So milk and cookies or crackers (without chocolate) may be useful and taste good as well.

3. Before bedtime I usually:
A. watch a little TV in bed
B. get my exercise
C. read a good book

One must develop some kind of pre-sleep ritual to break the connection between all the stress and bedtime. This is perhaps even more important for children. These rituals can be as short as 10 minutes or as long as an hour. Some find relief in making a list of all the stressors of the day, along with a plan to deal with them, as it serves to end the day. Combining this with a period of relaxation, perhaps by reading something light, meditating, or taking a hot bath can also help you get better sleep. And don't look at that clock! That tick-tock will tick you off.

The Glow of Love

My heart fills with joy as i knew that a close friend is going for her wedding photo shoot, in somewhere really nice... As I saw her yesterday, she looks really beautiful..radiance glowing on her face. A sister commented, "You look really radiant! Did you put on make-up?" I playfully teased her, "It must be the power of LOVE." Indeed, the love of Christ in her that give the glow on her face. I thought that she was going to tell me about the facials she has done etc to prepare herself for the photo shoot. Instead, she shared with me a testimony of how God has planned for her to go only after the prayer meet and has since paved the way. I am touched by her obedience to God in every area of her life. It is a love that does not feed on her desires but one committed to God fully. I remember her sharing to me a verse from the bible that in God's timing, He will make all things beautiful. Here am I, seeing it unfold in her life...just like a flower when it blooms. I pray that their love will blossom as they take this step forward. I recall a moment during the Global Prayer Meet 2 years ago, when the pastor prayed for godly couples in the church to impact the world, I made a desperate cry to God. Witnessing broken marriages day in, day out in my work, sometimes it gets discouraging. People seem to not take marriage seriously and commitment seems to go down the drain. The world needs to know that a happy marriage is possible and it starts from the church, the apple of God's eyes. It starts from believing christians being in godly marriages, to set the example...

A Cheerful Giver

God loves a cheerful giver - this I am certain of. Tonight I felt truly refreshed and blessed by a sister... Though I was late in meeting her for half an hour due to work and accidentally missed her calls 6 times, she was NOT upset at all and waited patiently for me. This reminds me of the verse from Corinthians that love is patient, love is kind... On top of that, she greeted me with a smile and told me she did not wait long. She even passed me 2 packet of biscuits. This gesture really touched me as she came, ready to bless. Though much younger than me, she was caring for me like I am younger, asking me if I have eaten and where I am going etc, whether my ez-link card has enough value. She sat with me, waited with me for the bus and watched till I left in the bus.

A person is remembered by giving of her heart when she is with another person. Thoughtfulness, to me, is thinking in the interests of others. A kind gesture and word is never forgotten...

I am also thankful to weiwei for coming down to my wrkplace to meet me for lunch today, though she has many things to do. June who agreed to go on a break with me just because I asked her and she rejected a date becos of that. Am also grateful for my colleague who bought me a kit-kat as I was feeling low and encouragement from my colleagues in my driving test. People who ask to pray for me, send sms to ask if I am ok. The police officer who took the time to write the report for my lost IC and empathetic towards my job condition. An ex-colleague who availed herself to meet with an ex-resident cos she has a problem. My coursemate who intiate a dinner with the rest though it's holiday. And many more.

A person who gives cheerfully is most ATTRACTIVE.

Teachers Vs Inspir-ers

I just ended my session with a bunch of energetic kids, teaching them that it is wrong to BULLY. Yep, that's the word... a tall order for me. I mean, can you even teach such a thing, in a classroom setting?! Maths, Science, Chinese ya I can do that but bullying. Hmmm...now this calls for some creativity. And more. I need to bring the real world into the classroom but how do I do that? The preparation begins... games, interactive and purposeful activities, video, worksheets. You name it, I have it but somehow, something is missing. Is it the furious writing down of answers by the little hands even before they finished watching the video? Or is it the arguing when they do not win in the game? Even when there are no results to be obtained, no grades to be judged. My conclusion: They have obviously been conditioned to learn in such a manner - systematic, result-oriented. There were some questions which had 2 possible answers and I was being questioned by the young minds? "How can there be 2 answers? No, there can only be 1 answer." Well well...Alas, a boy lost his temper and started crying for he did not get his answer correct. I brought him aside after the session and taught him the REAL lesson. No, I didn't punish him but rather, brought him through his behavior exhibited... His ability to realise his wrong is better than a 100% pass on the worksheets I gave out. Recently, I happened to speak to a few teachers who shared with me their experiences and it did stir some of my thoughts in influencing the next generation. Though I am not a teacher by profession, I believe that my job allows me to teach the children in other ways as well and here are some quotes which I really like, with regards to teaching.

Teachers are expected to reach unattainable goals with inadequate tools. The miracle is that at times they accomplish this impossible task. ~Haim G. Ginott

Don't try to fix the students, fix ourselves first. The good teacher makes the poor student good and the good student superior. When our students fail, we, as teachers, too, have failed. ~Marva Collins

A teacher should have maximal authority, and minimal power. ~Thomas SzazTo teach is to learn twice. ~Joseph Joubert, Pensées, 1842

To teach is to learn twice. ~Joseph Joubert, Pensées, 1842

Who dares to teach must never cease to learn. ~John Cotton Dana

The best teachers teach from the heart, not from the book. ~Author Unknown

The task of the excellent teacher is to stimulate "apparently ordinary" people to unusual effort. The tough problem is not in identifying winners: it is in making winners out of ordinary people. ~K. Patricia Cross

One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child. ~Carl Jung

Teaching should be full of ideas instead of stuffed with facts. ~Author Unknown

The teacher's purpose is not to create students in his own image, but to develop students who can create their own image. ~Author Unknown

The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires. ~William Arthur Ward

If a doctor, lawyer, or dentist had 40 people in his office at one time, all of whom had different needs, and some of whom didn't want to be there and were causing trouble, and the doctor, lawyer, or dentist, without assistance, had to treat them all with professional excellence for nine months, then he might have some conception of the classroom teacher's job. ~Donald D. Quinn
(This is funny :P)

The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called "truth." ~Dan Rather

I like a teacher who gives you something to take home to think about besides homework. ~Lily Tomlin as "Edith Ann"

Do we really know?

Stevie Smith - Not Waving But Drowning

Nobody heard him, the dead man,
But still he lay moaning:

I was much further out than you thought
And not waving but drowning.

Poor chap, he always loved larking
And now he's dead

It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way,
They said.

Oh, no no no, it was too cold always
(Still the dead one lay moaning)

I was much too far out all my life
And not waving but drowning.

An Entry For All Mothers

Magnets And Mothers

Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you.
~ Deuteronomy 5:16

Proverbs 31:26-31 (New International Version)
26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
27 She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:
29 "Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all."
30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
31 Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

A teacher gave her class of second-graders a lesson about the magnet and what it does. The next day, in a written test, she included this question: “My name has six letters. The first one is m. I pick up things. What am I?” When the test papers were turned in, the teacher was astonished to find that almost 50 percent of the students answered the question with the word mother.

Yes, mothers do pick up things. But they are much more than “magnets,” gathering up clothes and picking up toys around the house. As willing as many mothers are to do such chores, they have a higher calling than that.

A good mother loves her family and provides an atmosphere where each member can find acceptance, security, and understanding. She is there when the children need a listening ear, a comforting word, a warm hug, or a loving touch on a fevered brow. And for the Christian mother, her greatest joy is in teaching her children to trust and to love Jesus as their Savior.
That kind of mother deserves to be honored—not just on one special day a year but every day. And that recognition should involve more than words; it ought to be shown in respect, thoughtfulness, and loving deeds. — Richard De Haan

Of all the earthly things God gives,There’s one above all others:It is the precious, priceless giftOf loving Christian mothers. —Anon.

Godly mothers not only bring you up, they bring you to God.

Chair-ished

Went to look for a desk chair and was quite taken to one of it - Moses' older brother. Yup, that's the name of the chair :) It is said that our choices reflects us...Here's a quiz which states that the kind of chair we choose reflects the kind of person we are...
Clothed covered - You want your partner to be with you always, no matter when or where
Leather covered -You want your partner to be more open with you
Wood - You want your partner to take more care of his or her dress and manner
Cushion - want your partner to be a little bit more relaxed, calm and composed
One with a built-in massager - You want your partner to do more for you
Interesting! Not sure how true it is for me but I definitely place comfort as the top priority :) Always try the chair yourself because different people sitting on the same chair carries different effect, as I have realised :P

Nice Porridge

I am not a huge fan of porridge but this porridge located at Toa Payoh taste really good. They have such good raw fish ($3) that June ordered two plates. The porridge is also affordable, from $3.50-4.50. If u add an egg, it will cost $0.50 more. The meat is fresh and the porridge thick and good. Service is quick as well. However, the environment may be slightly warm due to an open concept though there is aircon. We tried the pork porridge and century egg, definitely worth the money. The you tiao is $0.90 for quite a big portion.
